I wrote this book some time ago, but it is now almost historical. It is set in the 1970s and tells my own story of how I landed in a small Spanish village, my impressions and my mistakes. I translated it into Spanish and my Spanish friends loved it as it rang a lot of bells!
This period was when Franco died and Spain became a democracy. I experienced the change from censorship, political and economic stagnation (the siesta) to the discovery of new ideas and hopes.
Above all, I was able to meet young people with open minds who rebelled against their parents’ conservative mentality. I found amazing creativity in new projects like a newspaper and drama. T
My book includes a play written by a boy in the village, which describes how the youngsters felt and the problems they faced. It struck me as totally authentic in its representation of how they spoke, felt and acted.
